A new district court, increased costs for medical health insurance and four capital murder cases are among the issues facing Coryell County commissioners as they work on developing a budget for the 2016-2017 fiscal year. In a budget workshop held Tuesday, commissioners took a hard look at the numbers, but stopped short of making any cuts. Those will likely come at a later date.

Most taxing entities already knew property values were going up, but many of them received additional good news when the certified values were announced by the Coryell Central Appraisal District. Only five protests remained in question when Mitch Fast, CCAD chief appraiser, sent out the certified values.

Seventy-year-old Jan Ward and her grandson, 14-year-old Turtle Powell, are closing in on their quest to run races in all 50 states. By the end of the summer, they will be down to only four, including Hawaii and Alaska.
