Kathleen Cockrell

February 16, 1927 – June 9, 2013

On Sunday morning, June 9, 2013, the Lord called Kathleen Bernice Cockrell to her eternal home in heaven to be with Him forever.

Kathleen was a long time resident of Gatesville and Temple, Texas. She was born on February 16, 1927, in Bell County, Texas, to Thomas E. Humphrey and Laura Alice Finch Humphrey; she was the youngest of seven children born to this union. On April 12, 1943, she married R.T. (Buck) Cockrell in Bell County, Texas. To this union, seven children were born: Beth, Danford, Denver, Brenda, Bradley, Royse and Humphrey. Kathleen helped her husband farm and ranch for many years until his death, at which time she began a career at Leaird’s Department Store in Gatesville, Texas. She loved meeting people and made many friends while at Leaird’s. Kathleen was a loving, kind, friendly and gentle lady that treated everyone with love and respect at all times. She was a Christian and knew that Jesus Christ was her Lord and Savior. She was ready to meet the Lord in heaven. She was a member of Gateway Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her father; mother; two brothers; four sisters; husband, R. T. (Buck) Cockrell; daughter, Alice Beth Williams Benner; and sons-in-law, Ronnie W. Adams and Rodney G. Hester.

Kathleen is survived by five sons, Danford Cockrell and wife, Renate, Denver Cockrell and wife, Debbie, Bradley Cockrell and wife, Tonia, Royse Cockrell and wife, Janice, and Humphrey Cockrell and wife, Debbie; one daughter, Brenda Adams Hester; 22 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.

Kathleen’s funeral service was held Wednesday, June 12, 2013, at 10 a.m. at Scott’s Funeral Home Chapel in Gatesville, Texas. Burial followed the service at Restland Cemetery in Gatesville, Texas.

    Floyd Donald Barkley

    Floyd Donald Barkley “Don,” 77, of Corinth, passed away on Sunday, June 9, 2013.

    He was born on June 6, 1936 in Lampasas, Texas to Floyd C. Barkley and Effie Lou Kinsey Barkley. He married Dolores Herrington in New Iberia, LA on October 5, 1963. He was a graduate of Petroleum Engineering from the University of Texas in Austin, was an Eagle Scout, a U.S. Army Veteran and 40-year petroleum executive. After 40 years as a resident of South Louisiana, he retired back to Texas. He was an avid golfer, hunter, and domino player. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Denton.

    Visitation was held from 9:30-11:00 a.m. Thursday, June 13, 2013 with the services at 11:00 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Cole Chapel with Rev. Jessica Wright officiating.     Don is survived by his wife, Dolores; daughter, Phyllis Barkley Briggs; son-in-law, Terry Briggs; son, Douglas M.H. Barkley; daughter-in-law, Meredith Zacek Barkley; grandchildren, Rachel Briggs, Stephen Briggs, Joseph Briggs, Camille Barkley, Blythe Barkley; brother, William Douglas Barkley. He is preceded in death by his parents and infant brother, Charles Edwin Barkley.

    Joe Don Shaw

    Joe Don Shaw, 20, of Oglesby died Thursday, June 6, 2013, from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident.

    Funeral services were held Tuesday, June 11, at College Avenue Baptist Church in McGregor with Bro. Billy Pogue officiating.

    Mr. Shaw was born Oct. 25, 1992, in Clifton to Larry and Jodi Shaw.

    Survivors include his parents, Larry and Jodi Shaw and Mike McCord; sisters, Chelsea, Skylar and Kyleigh Shaw and Brianna and Tawni McCord; and brothers, Carson, Nash and Abram Shaw and Michael McCord.

    In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been set up at First National Bank of McGregor/South Bosque.

    Robert (Bob) Mathews

    September 17, 1923 – June 10, 2013

    Robert (Bob) Mathews, age 89, of Gatesville, passed away Monday, June 10, 2013.

    Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 13, 2013, at Scott’s Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Willie Clarke officiating. Burial followed at Turnersville Cemetery.

    Bob was born on September 17, 1923, to the late Charlie and Lula Roberson Mathews. He grew up and attended school in Turnersville. Bob married Louise Spradley in 1946. He served in the U.S. Army during WW II in the European Theater. He was a former member of the Gatesville Jaycees and Gatesville Volunteer Fire Dept. Bob worked for 30 years at Hercules in McGregor and the Gatesville Housing Authority. He was a Baptist.

    He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers; and two sisters.

    Bob is survived by his wife of 67 years, Louise Mathews; sons, Robert (Rusty) Mathews and wife, Linda, Mike Mathews and wife, Eva and Ricky Mathews; daughter, Sandra Shepherd-Cain; grandchildren, Jimmy Shepherd, David Shepherd, Kristi Hyde and Charlotte Mathews; and 10 great-grandchildren.

    William D. (Bill) Cathey

    June 24, 1934 – June 6, 2013

    William D. (Bill) Cathey, age 78, of Gatesville passed away Thursday, June 6, 2013. Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, June 10, 2013 at Scott’s Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed at Restland Cemetery.

    Bill was born on June 24, 1934 to William Albert and Qmy Blundell Cathey. He lived in the Turnersville, Texas community and graduated from Turnersville High School in 1952. After graduating, he moved to Fort Worth to find work. He was called to serve his country in the U.S. Army from 1956-1959. Upon his return from the Army, he married Luwin Perryman from Gatesville, Texas in 1959. For many years they made their home in the suburbs of Fort Worth called Richland Hills. Bill, as he was known by many of his friends, worked for City of Fort Worth and Coca-Cola Bottling Company, where he retired. Bill and Luwin were active in the Englewood Methodist Church and enjoyed square dancing.

    He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Luwin Cathey; and his parents.

    Bill is survived by his son, Bryon Cathey and wife, Debra of Fort Worth, daughter, Tracie Good of Arkansas; five grandchildren, Seth, Katherine, Kristyn, Bronica and Justyn.

    Jeraldene Barnard Cole

    March 16, 1928 – June 6, 2013

    Jeraldene Barnard Cole, age 85, of Flat, passed away Thursday, June 6, 2013.

    Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, June 9, 2013, at Scott’s Funeral Home Chapel with Walter Davidson officiating. Burial followed at Mound Cemetery.

    Jeraldene was born on March 16, 1928, in Mound, Texas, to the late Sam and Ina Cummings Barnard. She attended school in Mound, graduating from Gatesville High School in 1945. She married Felix Royl (Preacher) Cole Jr. on April 27, 1946, in Gatesville. She was a member of Flat Baptist Church. Jeraldene was a loving wife, mother and grandmother.

    She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; three brothers, Case Barnard, Chick Barnard and Sterlin Barnard; three sisters, Della Marshall, Stella McFarlin and Hellen Cole; grandson, Brandon John Cole; and son-in-law, Bill Smith.

    Jeraldene is survived by her sons, Roy Cole and wife, Trisha of Flat and Randy Cole and wife, Kathy of Gatesville; daughter, Gaylene Smith of Gatesville; 11 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

    Eldon Muegge

    12/21-37-6-7-13

    Eldon Fred Muegge, age 88, of Gatesville, passed away Friday, June 7, 2013 at a local hospital.

    Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 10, 2013 at the Live Oak Baptist Church.

    Eldon was born January 19, 1925 in McGregor, Texas to Louis and Doris Muegge. He graduated from McGregor High School then immediately joined the Navy. He served on The Destroyer USS Indiana while in the Navy. He was a devoted sports fan for the local schools, Texas Rangers and Dallas Cowboys. Eldon got great entertainment watching all of his children and grandchildren playing in all of their sporting events. In his final years he loved to fish, work in the garden and work in his shop.

    He was preceded in death by his parents; spouse, Dorothy Faye Muegge; and two brothers, Lonnie and Ervin Muegge.

    Eldon is survived by his wife, Dorothy Jo Muegge; two sons, Johnny Muegge and James Muegge; daughter, Janet Lanham and husband, Drew; two step-children, Truman Herring and Sandra Oaks; grandchildren, Angie Botkin, Brett Blanchard, Clint Blanchard, Tim Muegge, Jordan Muegge, Ann Muegge, Crystal, Jonathan, Jamie and Mandy; step-grandchildren, Melissa and John Holmes, John Gibson, Jeffery Herring, Tiffany Weiss and Jennifer Harrison; and 20 great-grandchildren.

    Florence Leach

    March 10, 1926 – June 3, 2013

    Florence Leach, age 87, of Evant, passed away Monday, June 3, 2013.

    Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. today (Saturday), June 8, 2013, at First Baptist Church of Evant, 200 E. Live Oak St., with the Rev. Mike Lee and the Rev. Jamie Hudgins officiating. Burial will follow at Bee House Cemetery.

    Florence was born on March 10, 1926, in Bakersfield, California, to the late Clarence and Nettie Mae Croft Freeman. She grew up in California. Florence married Bassel D. Leach on May 11, 1942. They resided in Biggs, CA, until moving to Evant, TX, in 1983. He preceded her in death on December 10, 1997.

    She was also preceded in death by her son, Victor Humphrey; and three grandchildren.

    Florence is survived by her sons, Floyd Leach and wife, Kay, Bassel Lloyd Leach and wife, Carol, Richard Lee Leach and wife, Sharon Rena, John Leach, Alvin Leach and wife, Sara, Keith Leach, and Tim Leach and wife, Emma; daughters, Irene Mosley and husband, Clifford, Sharon Faye Eades, Rosie Devine and husband, Richard, Patty Showecker and husband, Roger, and Irene Leach; 31 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.

    W.L. (Buddy) Arnold

    W.L. (Buddy) Arnold, age 94, of Evant, passed away Monday May 27, 2013, at a local nursing facility.

    Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 30, 2013, at the First Methodist Church of Evant with Pastor Robert Cavanaugh officiating, assisted by the Rev. Don Johnson. Interment followed at Langford Cemetery.

    Buddy was born on January 2, 1919, at home on Bennett Creek in Lampasas County to Forrest and Elva Arnold. He was one of eight children, five boys and three girls. He served in World War II in France and Germany and was awarded the Bronze Star. He married Lenora Marwitz on May 14, 1940. He and Lenora lived in Evant all their lives. He was a life member of the Evant Methodist Church. He was a carpenter, farmer and rancher. He was the owner of the Magnolia Service Station in Evant. After retirement, he and Lenora enjoyed travelling the western United States in their travel trailer.

    He was preceded in death by three sisters, Eunice, Bernice and RevaNell; and one brother Deward.

    Buddy is survived by his beloved wife, Lenora of 73 years; a son, Kyle Arnold and his wife, Rita; a daughter, Carolyn Nunez and her husband, Leonard; three brothers, Lewis Arnold, Tainey Arnold and Cecil Arnold; a grandson, Brent Limmer and his wife, Vicki; granddaughter, Paula Manning and husband, Craig; and four great-grandchildren, Jamie and Jordan Limmer and Cole and Blake Wright.

    Gary L. Martin

    Gary L. Martin, age 57, of Moody passed away on Saturday, May 25, 2013.

    Funeral services were be 11a.m. Friday, May 31, 2013 at First Baptist Church of Moody with Pastor Tom Shelton officiating. A private family burial followed the service.

    Gary was born on June 3, 1956 in Temple, Texas to Joe Ellis and Patricia Martin. He graduated from Moody High School in 1975. During his life, he enjoyed bull riding, team roping, team penning, and farming. He worked as a welder for Jack Kamman, as a machinist for Griggs Equipment and also worked with his brother and grandparents who owned Mayo’s Mobile Service Station. Then, in 1977, he purchased his first wrecker, establishing Gary Martin’s Wrecker Service which was family operated and McLennan County’s oldest wrecker service. In 1981, he built Moody Service Center. He was a member of the Moody Volunteer Fire Department. He introduced Jaws of Life to the community and surrounding area. He was a member of the First Baptist Church and was a leader in the community.

    He was preceded in death by his father, Joe Ellis, mother, Patricia, and brother, James Ellis Martin, as well as his grandparents, Cora Bell and Aubrey Mayo.

    Gary is survived by his wife, Laura, his daughter and son-in-law, Micheale and J.D. Minatrea, son and daughter-in-law, James and Krystal Martin, and sister and brother-in-law, Jo Ann and Dick Kern. He is also survived by his five grandchildren who he loved and treasured: J.W. Minatrea (“the Boss”), Emily Minatrea (“my Emmy”), Chase Swanson (“C Russ”), Zoey Martin (“Zo Zo”), and Jesse James Martin (“Caveman”) and his niece and nephew, Tatyana and Nicholas Kern.

    He lived the spirit of the true cowboy and was loved and respected by many and will be greatly missed.

    My friend, I will see you when my chores are done, hold the gate for me and keep the coffee warm.
