Moore named MVP at basketball banquet

Gatesville Booster Club sets golf tourney

Gatesville Country Club will host the 15th Annual Hornet Booster Club Golf Tournament Sunday, May 26, to benefit the Gatesville High School athletic department.

Complete with a $300 prize for the winning team, as well as prizes for closest to the pin and longest drive winners, the four-person scramble will tentatively start at 1 p.m.

Burchell named Leos Memorial Award winner

Oglesby High School senior Brandon Burchell, right, was presented the Sammy Leos Memorial Award during the OHS athletic banquet. Willie Leos, left, made the presentation.

Oglesby High School student-athletes were honored Tuesday at the annual athletic banquet in the school cafeteria.

The highlight of the evening was the presentation of the Sammy Leos Memorial Award, given annually to an Oglesby athlete who demonstrates character and leadership.

Fire Ant tour back again

Another year has come and gone, but locals keep riding for a cause.

Riders will benefit a scholarship fund for Gatesville High School students at the 18th Annual Fire Ant Tour on Saturday, June 8 at the Gatesville Civic Center (formerly the Coryell Activities Complex).

Diaz 'not very happy' at rainy state meet

Rainy weather wasn’t all that could have put Kaira Diaz in a gloomy mood Friday.

Despite sitting a total of 4:45 under two weather delays Friday at the UIL Conference 1A Division II state track meet at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin, Evant’s junior kept her chin up after she took fifth in the girls’ 100-meter hurdles and sixth in the 300-meter hurdles.

McKamie upgrades 'preliminary'

Addison Santulan has trained in Gatesville’s McKamie Stadium, like hundreds of Hornet athletes before him, for years to help the athletic program in the upcoming season.

With discussions at several recent Gatesville ISD board meetings involving the installation of a new artificial turf football field and more renovations, Santulan said he would approve the changes.

McGhee blasts her way to 8-3A MVP

Blayne McGhee returned to her starting role just in time to lead Gatesville to a historic season.

Gatesville’s sophomore catcher did not start for nearly all of the first half the season recovering from offseason labrum surgery, but reclaimed her spot behind the plate before league play to help the Hornets blaze a trail to second place in District 8-3A and earn recognition as the league’s Most Valuable Player.

Violation puts girls in third, boys 7th

Gatesville was marching its way to a silver medal, but a ruling by the UIL halted the band.

Despite overtaking second place Friday in the final round of the state 3A girls’ golf tournament, a rules violation disqualified one Hornet and caused the team to fall into third place by a single stroke at Jimmy Clay Golf Course in Austin.

Gatesville collides with No. 6 Burkburnett

Few can blame Crystal O’Brien for being emotional after the playoff loss that ended a special season.

Coaching her last games at the helm for Gatesville softball, O’Brien and the Hornets tearfully embraced Friday in right field at Alvarado High School’s softball field after being handed consecutive losses by No. 6 Burkburnett in the area-round of the state 3A playoffs.

John Claude Gartman

In loving memory of John Claude Gartman, a memorial service will be held today (Saturday), May 4, 2013, at 10 a.m. at Trinity Baptist Church (sanctuary), in San Antonio, TX.

John C. Gartman, age 94, went to be with his Lord April 19, 2013. He was born in Gatesville, TX, on February 3, 1919, to Charley and May Parmer Gartman. J.C. was reared on a farm in Coryell County, TX, which was part of the acquisition
