Mack Dorman Maxwell, beloved husband, father and grandfather, went to be with the Lord, on Tuesday, September 4, 2012, at 7:30 a.m., following a lengthy illness.
He is survived by his wife of 21 years, Kanita Beavers Maxwell; son, Keith Maxwell and wife, Cheryl; daughter, Elizabeth and husband, Robert Lee; son, Mark Maxwell and wife, Karen; step-son, Allen Davis and wife, Reneé; and twelve grandchildren: Garrett Lee, Travis Lee, Alex Maxwell, Zachary Maxwell, Isaac Maxwell, Andrew Maxwell, Rebecca Lee, Mason Davis, Parker Davis, Stephanie Zwinggi, Elizabeth Zwinggi and Kyle Zwinggi. He is also survived by brother, Raymond Maxwell and wife, Olene; sister, Gladys Wright; and brother, Paul Maxwell; along with numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by parents, UD Maxwell and Annie Lee Faust; younger brother, David Bruce Maxwell; his wife of 31 years, Nelta Pearl Maxwell; brother-in-law, Ortis Wright; and sister-in-law, Annita Benningfield Maxwell.
Born December 15, 1928, in Turnersville, Texas, he was a graduate of the Gatesville High School. After serving his country in the United States Army during the Korean War, he went on to complete the following degrees: B.S. in History/Education, M.S. in History/Education and an Administrative Certificate in Education. He went on to become an educator and principal, and was employed with the Texas Juvenile Justice Department (previously known as the Texas Youth Commission) for more than 26 years.
Mack was committed to serving his community with over 50 years of service in the Lions Clubs of both Gatesville and Gainesville, Texas. While living in Gatesville, Texas, he was a member of First Baptist Church and taught the pre-schoolers Sunday School class. After moving to Gainesville, Texas, he became a member of the Temple Baptist Church, where he was a member of the Dan Holder’s “Old Goat” Sunday School Class.
Services were held on Thursday, September 6, 2012, at 2 p.m. in the Temple Baptist Church. Graveside services were held the following morning, 10 a.m., Friday, September 7, at the Levita Cemetery (north of Gatesville, Texas).
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Gainesville Lions Club to establish a scholarship fund in honor of Mack D. Maxwell. (Memorials may be mailed to the Gainesville Lions Club, in care of Clem Steubing at 2012 Greenbriar, Gainesville, Texas 76240.)
