Waco native Jane Atkinson McClellan, 89, loving wife of the late RADM Thomas R. McClellan, U.S.N. (Ret.), died on September 28, 2012, at The Fairfax senior living community in Fort Belvoir, Virginia.
A private graveside service will be held later this month at the U.S. Naval Academy Cemetery in Annapolis, Maryland.
Jane was born on August 24, 1923, to prominent Waco attorney John B. Atkinson and his wife, Virginia. After graduating from Waco High School in 1939, Jane attended Stephens College (Missouri) and then the University of Texas for one year before graduating from Baylor University in 1944. While attending Baylor, she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma.
Jane married Waco native, Navy Lieutenant Thomas R. McClellan, on July 6, 1944, in a wartime wedding at Waco’s First Presbyterian Church. As the wife of a Naval officer, Jane and her family enjoyed living and traveling in various parts of the world. She became a friend to many and could be counted on for her sense of fun and support. She could accomplish the impossible, no matter how difficult the task. She was a member of the DAR and the National Society of Colonial Dames of America. She served on numerous Navy Relief Ball committees and chaired at least one. She was also a past president of the Navy Officers’ Wives Club.
Jane and Tom’s marriage was blessed with three children: John Clay McClellan, Susan McClellan Thomas and Thomas Robert McClellan.
Jane was predeceased by her parents; and by her beloved husband of 66 years, retired Rear Admiral Thomas R. McClellan, in 2010. She is survived by her three children.
Jane will be truly missed by her family and friends who dearly loved and admired her because of her fine character and many other splendid qualities.
