Allene Logan Keener, age 96, passed away Thursday, October 25, 2012, at The Meadows.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, October 29, 2012, at the First Baptist Church of Gatesville with Ben Winder officiating. Burial followed at Restland Cemetery.

Allene was born April 27, 1916, in Coryell County and reared in the Gatesville, Texas, area. She was the daughter of Henry Grady Logan and Ruby Nora Hackney Logan, who were also born and raised in Coryell County. She married Walter William Keener, the son of Mashe Augusta Keener and Betty Cordia Inman Keener, of Coryell County, on November 28, 1934, in the Gatesville Courthouse. Her husband worked in the oil field industry as a roughneck, driller and tool pusher and also in construction as a millwright. They lived along the Texas Gulf Coast, South Louisiana, West Texas and in many other locations throughout Texas, New Mexico, Arkansas and Louisiana. Allene and Walter had two children, Kenneth, born in 1935 in Texas City, Texas, and Aneta, born in 1939 in Brownsville, Texas. Allene worked in retail sales for a number of years and in the 1950s, she graduated from nursing school. For several years she worked in hospital intensive care units and in 1955 she was named “Nurse of the Year” at Midland Memorial Hospital in Midland, Texas. She retired from nursing about 1965. She was active in Baptist church activities, taught Sunday school and was at one time, the superintendent of the Beginners Department at the First Baptist Church in Kermit, Texas. Her great-great-grandfather, Hillary Logan, and great-grandfather, James Martin Logan, were founders and charter members of the First Baptist Church of Gatesville, Texas. James Martin Logan also was a member of a Texas Ranger unit that was formed from the Gatesville and Waco areas circa the Civil War period. A few years after her husband died, she moved back to Gatesville, Texas, from Midland, Texas, and returned to her roots. She again joined the First Baptist Church in Gatesville, where she was saved as a young girl.

She lived the past few years at “The Oaks” and “The Meadows” in Gatesville, where she found some of her relatives and friends from the past both working and living there. Some of her friends there were fellow classmates from her early school years in Coryell County.

As a young woman, Allene went to many of the dances and social events in Gatesville and Coryell County and it was at one of these dances that she met her future husband. She and Walter loved to dance the schottische. She liked Mexican food, especially tacos and making enchiladas, and loved to go fishing, can, make jelly and oil paint. She also loved to travel, see the country and visit friends and relatives.

She was preceded in death by her mother in 1971; father in 1973; husband, Walter, in 1993; adopted son, David Keener in 1997; brother, Tom Logan in 2002; sister, Callie Logan Wise in 2012; and grandson, Tom Askins in 2012.
