Gerald Rutherford, 56, of Gatesville, told police he fell asleep, which caused an accident that left him seriously injured. According to the police report, about 4 p.m. Tuesday, Rutherford was driving a 2004 Dodge Dakota westbound in the 1100 block of East Main Street when he fell asleep and veered off the south side of the road. The pickup clipped a sign in front of the First Presbyterian Church, went through a chain link fence and struck a brick porch before coming to a rest on its side. Rescue workers from the Gatesville Volunteer Fire Department had to cut Rutherford out of the vehicle. Rutherford was taken by ambulance to Coryell Memorial Hospital, and then by helicopter to Scott & White Hospital in Temple, where he was listed in serious condition at press time.
