June 15, 1922 – November 29, 2012
Imogene Curry Spencer, age 90, of Gatesville, passed away Thursday, November 29, 2012.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, December 1, 2012, at Scott’s Funeral Home Chapel with Minister Deral McWhorter officiating. Burial followed at Smith Cemetery in Purmela.
Imogene was born on June 15, 1922, in the Hay Valley Community of Coryell County, the youngest child of Eucie Elihue and Maude Alice McClesky Curry. She went to school in the Plainview community for many years and graduated from Gatesville High School in 1940. She played basketball, loved and excelled at the sport, where she was given the nickname “Mac” by her coach. She enjoyed working in retail for many years, making many lasting friends along the way. She met her future husband, Kid Spencer, when they both worked in downtown Gatesville. He was the manager at the A&P grocery store and she was employed at Leaird’s department store. After seeing her inside the big glass window decorating for the season, Kid announced to his brother that was the woman he would marry…and he did! The union lasted 36 years until his death in 1986.
She had a passion for writing and cooking, and enjoyed sharing both with her friends and loved ones. The loves of her life were her Heavenly Father, her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Imogene was a lifetime member of the West Main Church of Christ. She truly lived the life of the virtuous woman, as spoken of in Proverbs 31. This was confirmed by her husband, except, he said, for the “early rising” part!
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Walter (Kid) Spencer in 1986; twin sons, Ronald Charles Spencer in 2012 and Donald Charles Spencer in 2011; and siblings, Clifford Curry, Bentley Curry, Stella Kelso and Gladys Mayberry.
Imogene is survived by her daughters, Kay Bell and husband, Keith, and Penny Massingill and husband, Lynn; grandchildren, Gavin Massingill and wife, Holly, Chase Massingill, Tobi Shirley and husband, Brandon, Lane Olvera and husband, Victor, Seth Bell and wife, Marissa, and Darion Roberts; great-grandchildren, Mace Massingill, Foster Shirley, Fielder Shirley, Zebedee G. Bell, and Zaiden Bell; and dear nieces, Grace Odom, Jean Schmedthorst, Belva Field, Peg Garrett and Pam Jones.
Our deep gratitude goes to the caregivers who lovingly devoted themselves to Mother over the years. Debra, Cheryl, Peggy and Alma were among her sweet angels. A special thank you to the caring staff at The Meadows, who gave excellent attention and care to her during her final three weeks.
Memorials may be made to West Main Church of Christ, P.O. Box 55, Gatesville, Texas 76528 or individual’s favorite charity.
