County fire departments battle fires over the weekend

Posted

Local fire departments worked together to respond to two fires over the weekend of Aug. 17, according to a Facebook post by the Coryell County Sheriff’s Office.

Flat, Oglesby, and Gatesville fire departments responded to a structure fire on South State Highway 36 across from the Flat Post Office.

Evant, Copperas Cove, and Gatesville fire departments were also on-scene at a brush fire on Harmon Road.

Fire Chief Billy Vaden said in an email that the structure fire in Flat occurred after an electrocuted bird fell from a power line onto the ground, causing grass and trash to burn under someone’s back porch.

The grass fire on Harmon Road came from a flying ember of cardboard that caught fire for an unknown reason, Vaden said.

The Coryell County Sheriff’s Department updated the social media post on Aug. 17 saying both fires had been extinguished and that units have cleared the scenes.
