National Grandparents Day is a special day designated to honor the grandparents in our lives. The annual observance day is held on the first Sunday after Labor Day in the United States and recognizes the wisdom, guidance, and support that grandparents provide to their grandchildren.

The day was first brought to light in the early 1970’s by Marian McQuade, a housewife from West Virginia. McQuade wanted to establish a day that would acknowledge the important role that grandparents play in families and society to encourage intergenerational bonding.
Her efforts to establish the holiday were successful, and in 1978, President Jimmy Carter signed a proclamation officially recognizing National Grandparents Day.
Since then, grandparents are now celebrated annually with various activities and events that give grandchildren an opportunity to show appreciation for their grandparents. From homemade cards and gifts to special outings and family gatherings, the day provides a chance to express gratitude and affection for the elder members of the family.
