It was a heartbreaking loss in the bi-district round of the boys basketball playoffs for the Jonesboro Eagles as they fell to the Hubbard Jaguars 62-52 in a game played Feb. 22 at Bruceville-Eddy High School.

The Eagles had a difficult 17-7 deficit early and came close to overcoming the margin but fell short. The key time span in the Jaguars victory came in the second quarter when they managed a 20-9 run on the Eagles, ending the first half on top by a 54-29 margin.

The Eagles tried to narrow the gap in the second half, scoring 15 points in the third and 23 points in the fourth.

According to JHS head coach Chris Simon, the first half brought some “costly turnovers and too many extra shots,” but he was proud of how his players finished the game, overcoming some of the obstacles they faced in the first half.

“The fourth quarter we really battled and played our (butt) off,” Simon said. I was very proud of how we ended the game. We just ran out of time, sadly.”

Jonesboro was led in scoring by Ian Shoaf with 18 points, followed by Garrett Young with eight. Jacob Cisneros, Dakota Riley, Nat Hiliker and Layton Blanchard each scored 5 points. Costin Allison finished with four points, while Manny Torres scored two.

The Eagles ended their season with a 13-12 overall record. They posted a 9-3 district record, finishing third in District 25-1A.
