First Methodist awarded Yard of Month

Posted

Keep Gatesville Beautiful recently announced that the First Methodist Church won the Yard of the Month award for May.

Stephen Schmidt became the pastor in 2018 and mentioned that the landscaping was installed back in 2012, and that the upkeep is a joint effort between the church volunteer members.

A combination of drip and spray irrigation is used on the church’s landscape.

Two to three times a year, volunteers from the church congregation will get everything cleaned and trimmed up. Locals Mary and Gary Kafer tend to the flower beds as well.

The landscape includes Crepe Myrtles, a Blad Cyprus, Wax Myrtle bushes, Knockout Roses, Monkey Grass, Oleanders, Lantanas, Mealy Cup Sages, and African Irises.

The church has a long history within the community, since the original building was founded around the same time as Gatesville, in 1854. The current church was built in 1971.

The First Methodist Church is located at 2600 East Main Street.
