GISD approves application for bullet-resistant shields grant

The Gatesville Independent School District Board of Trustees has approved an application for a grant for bullet-resistant shields for the GISD Police Department.

The action was taken at the April 17 meeting of the school board.

"We are applying for a grant to get our police department the shields, and it must include a resolution for the board and an agreement about the use of funds," said Yancey Sanderson, executive director of testing and federal programs for GISD.

Board member Mary Anne Leib said, "I don't know anything about bullet-proof stuff, but I know there are different types of bullets (with the ability to penetrate items)."

Sanderson said the grant, for $27,000, would allow the purchase of what is referred to as a 3-plus shield.

"This is similar to what the (Coryell County) Sheriff's Department just got," he said. "It is what Chief (Gary) Stiles selected."
