Junior High auditorium to be named in honor of Clay Reeves

Posted

The Gatesville Independent School Board has recently voted to approve the dedication of the junior high auditorium to long-time educator Clay Reeves. The dedication will be held at the junior high auditorium on Friday, May 12, at 4:15 p.m. The community is invited to attend.

With a career spanning 55 years in Gatesville, Reeves taught Pre-Algebra and Algebra to generations of students. In addition to his math courses, Reeves began teaching a speech and drama elective at GJHS, as well as making a major contribution to the students of GISD through his theatrical productions.

In 1976, to commemorate the Bicentennial, Reeves wrote his first production titled, American Hysteria. It is important to note that every seventh-grade student participated in some fashion with the production of that play. Reeves not only wrote the scripts, but he would help with the sound and lighting as well as designing props, scenery, and costumes.

Some of his notable plays were: The Legend of Sherwood Forest, Earth Angel, Cat’s Whiskers, Bamboozle, Prince’s Bride, and Mississippi Smith.

Reeves has even occasionally performed in his own plays, often singing, or acting alongside his students. His final theatrical performance was 1992’s Prances and Fools.

Gatesville Junior High is located at 307 S. Lovers. Ln.
