Sign up for library cards in September

By Faye Nichols, Library Director

September is Library Card Signup Month! Since 1987, Library Card Sign-up Month has been held each September to mark the beginning of the school year. During the month, the American Library Association and libraries unite in a national effort to ensure everyone signs-up for their own library card.

Throughout the school year, public librarians and library staff will assist parents and caregivers with saving hundreds of dollars on educational resources and services for students. From free access to STEAM programs/activities, educational apps, technology workshops to the expertise of librarians, a library card is one of the most cost-effective back-to-school supplies available. We are happy to announce that The Gatesville Public Library has partnered with GISD to offer our digital collection to every student enrolled in school. Through the use of the Sora app from Overdrive, students can use their school credentials to check out eBooks from our library’s collection using parameters set by each campus. This also allows every student to have access to our digital collection whether they have their own library card or not.

Back by popular demand and requests to continue throughout the year, we will have our ABCs of Yoga for Kids every Monday at 10 a.m. This basic yoga class will include poses for each letter of the alphabet and the use of yoga stories with poses to act out the story. We will also throw in some nutrition tips and ways to stay healthy for kids. Children and their caregivers are encouraged to attend. Yoga mats are furnished.
