Posted

Athletes of Team Gatesville recently attended the Special Olympics 2024 Summer State Games in San Antonio this past week, where they won a plethora of medals for their achievements.

Caitlin Clough took home gold medals in the 25-meter wheelchair race and in the 25-meter assisted walk, as well as winning a gold medal in Fundamental Sports. Hope Lacefield won a bronze medal in the 50-meter walk. Tristen Tidrick earned a silver medal in the 50-meter walk and won fifth place in softball. Addison Van De Water claimed a gold medal in the 25-meter run.

While the athletes and parents had some down-time at the event, they enjoyed activities at Heroes Stadium and at Morgan’s Wonderland, which is the world’s first all-inclusive and accessible theme park, which was designed to accommodate to those with special needs.

Director of Team Gatesville Heidi Clough expressed that the athletes trained weekly throughout the spring, focusing on their specific events, and building their endurance and strength.

“We are grateful to Gatesville ISD for the generous use of the track for our practices,” Clough said.

Clough expressed that she is incredibly proud of the team's performance, and that it was amazing to see them stand on the podium with their medals.

“The true blessing is seeing them overcome obstacles and setbacks and come out stronger on the other side,” she said. “They've not only achieved great things, but they've grown as individuals and found a sense of accomplishment.”

Clough extends her thanks to the athletes' parents, coaches, and the Special Olympics Texas staff and volunteers who have invested countless hours and endless energy into supporting the team.

“We couldn't have done it without the unwavering support of our amazing community, including our generous donors who have made it possible for our athletes to participate in this incredible experience,” Team Gatesville said in an online post.

Each contribution has helped the program provide opportunities for individuals with intellectual disabilities to develop their skills, build confidence, and make lifelong friendships through sports.

Special Olympics Texas is a year-round movement, holding more than 300 competitions annually at area, regional, and state levels. Event divisions are based on age, gender, and ability to give athletes an equal chance to win. Each participant receives a medal or ribbon following their events.
