GHS choir student wins UIL State Championship

Posted

Gatesville High School was excited to share the fact that GHS Choir Sophomore Nevin Benning was named an “Outstanding Performer” by the UIL State Solo Contest - meaning that he is now a State Champion.

During competition, Nevin sang “The Vagabond” by Ralph Vaughan, and it was reported that the judge was instantly impressed and suggested he should study music in college.

According to GHS Choir Director Cherith Wells, “This marks the FOURTH Choir student to receive this award in the past 6 years.”

GISD Superintendent Barrett Pollard had the following to say about him: "Nevin and his older brother Narvell came to us a couple of years ago all the way from Buffalo, New York. Narvell has since graduated, but both were great additions to our school. Nevin earning Outstanding Performer during the UIL State Solo Contest is a huge accomplishment. It truly is equivalent to being a state champion, and the judge was thoroughly impressed with Nevin's performance."
