Oglesby Wins Big Over Gholson

The Oglesby football team cruised against Gholson on Friday night, defeating the Wildcats by a score of 58-8 to improve to 1-2 on the season.

Coach Jeb Dixon said he was proud of his team's effort and said his players did a good job adjusting to some changes from the previous week's game.

“The kids played well against Gholson,” Dixon said. “We changed a few things after the May game, and I thought they responded well to the changes.”

Dixon said he had a couple of standout performances in the game against Gholson.

“Jack Hendricks had 14 tackles, and Kayson Campbell had 3 tackles for loss,” Dixon said. “Kyler Fossett had 5 touchdowns.”

The Tigers will play at Waco Methodist at 7p.m. on Sept. 20, and Dixon said he anticipates another good game.

“Waco Methodist has had a few injuries early,” Dixon said. “But I expect them to be healthy and ready to play.”

Elks Come Up Short at Blanket

The Evant football team lost to Blanket on Friday by a score of 54-0 in which the Elks were hit hard by the injury bug.

Coach Brandon Young said despite the loss, he was able to evaluate some of his younger talent and was impressed by what he saw.

“We had a tough night out,” Young said. “We had three starters out, which makes it tough to overcome in six man. But at the same time, a few younger guys got some valuable playing experience.”

Young said there was one bright spot in the game for the Elks.

“I thought Christian Morales ran the ball hard for us,” Young said. “He’s got a good eye for finding the holes.”

Evant will host Kopperl at 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 20, and Young said his team will have its work cut out.

“Kopperl will be another tough one,” Young said. “They are coached well over there. We will need to have a good week of practice.”

Jonesboro Has Little Trouble with Calvert

The Jonesboro football team improved to 2-1 on the season on Friday night with a 78-6 victory over Calvert.

Coach Eddie Gallegos said it was a good win against a team that could have potentially been very dangerous for the Eagles.

"They are an athletic team with good speed in the backfield and a very solid receiver,” Gallegos said. “We settled in and began to contain their spread back, and our back end limited their receiver to a couple of catches."

Gallegos said it was a good overall effort from his team but added that one player in particular is really emerging as a leader on one side of the ball.

"Luke Stephenson has embraced becoming our starting quarterback,” Gallegos said. “He has been our backup tailback, but he is getting better each week leading our offense."

Jonesboro will host Grace Classical Christian Academy at 7 p.m. on Sept. 20, and said for this game, the emphasis will be on execution.

"This is an opponent we are not familiar with,” Gallegos said. “We'll focus this week on fundamentals and just getting better."

Gatesville Volleyball Team Defeats Waco

The Gatesville volleyball team defeated Waco last Friday by a score of 3-0 in one of its final games for the start of district competition later this month.

Coach Janey Weber said that she was pleased with the effort against Waco and said it was a good match to help get ready for district competition.

“We played really well against Waco High,” Weber said. “We were aggressive and controlled. District is only three games away, and we are preparing every day to get ready.”

Lady Elks Rally for Win Over Bluff Dale

Jonesboro Volleyball Gets Boost from Younger Players

The Jonesboro volleyball defeated Kopperl on Friday night in a game that featured some of the Lady Eagles upcoming talent.

Coach Tori Smith said it took some maneuvering, but everything worked out in the end.

“We struggled in the first set, switched up the rotation a bit, and played some JV athletes up,” Smith said. “But we came out on top winning all 3 sets.”

Smith said she had a couple of players step up in the victory.

“Julie Henderson had a phenomenal game as well as one of our JV players, Ryli Bryson,” Smith said. “She’s young, but so eager to learn and just gets better and better each game. We’ve got a lot of work cut out for us to bring this group of athletes together to play as a team and rely on their team for support on and off the court.”
