The man of many voices

At the young age of 25, Colin Dexter has become known as “the man of many voices.” He continues to captivate audiences with his versatile renditions of music from the 1950s to the 1970s.

Some of his main tributes celebrate legends like Roy Orbison, Conway Twitty, George Jones, Hank Williams and, of course, Elvis. Dexter continues to bring their timeless classics to life with his powerful performances across the nation.

He was born and raised in Jackson, Michigan and moved with his wife to Texas in 2020 to pursue his singing career. Moving from Dallas to Gatesville about four years ago, Dexter said, “We moved to Gatesville because we enjoyed the people down here who were very friendly and kind, and it was a great decision for my music as well.”

When he was about seven years old, Dexter said he started singing different songs, but didn’t really start discovering his voice until he was about 13 or 14 years old. “I’ve studied Elvis since I was about 5 years old and started out doing a tribute to him when I was 13 and, as I got older, I branched out and started to do other artists in my tributes,” he said. “My favorite Elvis songs are ‘Hurt’ and ‘Return to Sender’ – both great tunes.”

Crediting his maternal grandparents, Dexter said, “My Nana and Papa inspired me the most to pursue a music career. My Nana introduced me to Elvis and rock-n-roll, and my Papa introduced me to Hank Williams, George Jones, and Bluegrass music. My Nana passed in 2012, and my Papa passed just a few months ago from Dementia, but I do what I do for them and hope they are proud of me.”

Dexter’s continued popularity, talent, and amazing voice have allowed him to perform across the United States. “I’ve performed in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Tennessee, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Texas, and a few locations in Canada. I don’t think I have many interesting stories to share, but maybe just the fact that I’ve had a wonderful time doing all of those shows and that I can still continue to do what I do best.”

About his recent induction as an honorary member in the Gatesville Country Music Hall of Fame, Dexter said, “It was such an honor and a blessing to be handed an award that has such significance in the Gatesville community. It was wonderful. It is the best award I have ever received, and I haven’t received many. It’s definitely a huge blessing and accomplishment in my book.”

As for his future, Dexter stated, “My hopes and goals for entertaining are to make it big one day in the country music field. I love classic country and I hope one day country music will make a turn around and go back to its roots. I just love sharing the classic songs with my audience. I hope to also perform on the Grand Ole Opry one day – but a man can dream.”
