Posted

Workforce Solutions of Central Texas’ program, “Wrenches to Wheels: Building Bikes and Building Skills” visited with Gatesville Junior High students on Thursday, June 6 to construct their very own bikes.

Wrenches to Wheels is a unique summer initiative that aims to empower sixth and seventh grade students by providing them with the opportunity to build their own bikes under the guidance of industry professionals.

Throughout the process, students gained the knowledge of problem-solving abilities as they overcame challenges such as attaching pedals and adjusting brakes. Additionally, students obtained mechanical skills, learned to use tools effectively, and developed a sense of independence and self-reliance through the completion of their own bicycle.

Students were partnered with community leaders who mentored them throughout the bike-building process, imparting valuable skills such as mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, and problem-solving.

During the event, comprehensive bicycle safety instruction along with helmets were provided by McLane Children’s Hospital.

When the students completed the bike-building phase, they received additional instruction on safe riding practices and the provision of bike helmets to enhance the educational aspect of the program.

Students were able to take their bikes home as well after the event concluded.
